My story “1954 Topps Ted Williams #1” appears in Rundelania #19.
I love my story, but I’ll admit, my title doesn’t thrill me. Still, if you’ve ever even dabbled with baseball cards, it should grab your attention.
“1954 Topps Ted Williams #1” is set in the early-1990s world of baseball card shows, told from the baseball card dealer’s point of view. This is not at all a stretch, since I began setting up at baseball card shows assisting my uncle in the mid-1980s (he’d give me three-feet of table space [and a few bucks] in exchange for helping work his two or three tables), and continued on selling cards full time myself from about 1989-93 (guesstimating there). I’d be all over Long Island, set up for as many as three to four days per week with either my Dad or one of my friends helping out.
While “1954 Topps Ted Williams #1” is fiction, I tried to include a lot of detail of this sometimes strange world, and yeah, there’s some true stuff in there too (yes, my friend’s car did break down inside the Nassau Coliseum while I was setting up!). It’s a fun story, a PG-read, and hopefully you enjoy it even if you’ve never dabbled in the hobby.
You can read my story in full, free of charge, here at Rundelania. Here’s the opening for a taste:
