My story “Much Obliged” appears in JAKE: The Anti-Literary Magazine, April 29, 2024:
This is a long one (it prints out to 27 pages), so I’m hoping you stick over at JAKE for awhile and read it all the way to the end!
Interesting behind-the-scenes on this story, a personal favorite–impossible to write this many pages and spend so much time with the story without that being the case–but I had submitted it around to several places, so once JAKE had accepted, I wrote to withdraw it from consideration at any other magazines. One of the lit journals must have missed my withdrawal email, because they then accepted it a couple of weeks after JAKE already had. Awkward! Anyway, that situation was smoothed over without any bad feelings, and I’ve already sent another story over to that second market for their consideration. In the end, that mix-up just made me feel all the better about my story because, as all writers know, acceptances are few and far between, so to have a story find friendly eyes twice … well, yes!
But the only place you’ll be able to read “Much Obliged” in full is over on JAKE. I’ve clipped the first paragraph and posted it below, but please do be sure to head over to JAKE to read my story in full (no paywall; you can read it all for free!). And thank you for doing so!
